When Jackson was alive he was unpopular

I think people are mostly remembering and mourning the Michael Jackson that was. The damaged and abused little boy, and the musical genius he was early on,
before his behaviour, and appearance became so weird. His death also does seem tragic, because he was only 50 years old.
You raise a good point. Tom Cruise is fairly widely hated these days, but when he dies, people will probably choose to forget his bizarre behaviour and attachment to the cult, and instead focus on the movies he made during his heyday. Some people may even feel sorry for Cruise for being a "victim" of $cientology. |

The quickest way for a "sinner" to become a "saint" is to die. This happened with Princess Di and countless others. Once gone, most
people tend to remember the good things. Normal human behavior, IMHO....

I haven't seen a single suck-up posting yet. Just a lot of respect for the art, a lot of disgust for the crimes, nostalgia for what was and a sense of sorrow for what might have been. |

I agree. No one here has given MJ a pass from what I've read.

freeanakin wrote: Nailing my colours firmly to the mast here, I am not a fan of Michael Jackson or his music. Never have been, never will be and I have no sorrow in my heart or sense of loss at his passing. He was, IMHO rather over rated, past his best many, many years ago and an abuser of children. Goodbye and good riddance. I only feel pity for his children - and not because they have lost their father but because one selfish man paid to have them brought into the world to satisfy his own wants and vanity and then cocooned them in an unrealistic life, exposed them to his many abuses and excesses (and I'm talking about his drug use and bizzare behaviour here, rather than anything else before any apologists lurking try to jump on me) and then left them unprepared the reality, both in life experience and (probably) education. Looking into the future and the death of Tom Cruise.. I dislike the man. He is a mediocre actor involved in a destructive cult, who closes his eyes to the abuses that his so called best buddy David Miscaviage demands be inflicted on those not fortunate enough to be able to have celebrity status and great wealth. When the GMD dies I shall not be shedding any tears, nor shall I feel anything but pity for the children involved in his fucked up life, and even if he dies pulling a fluffy ickle kitten out of the path of a runaway train I won't be changing my opinion of him. I'll still think he's a turd and I'll still say it long and loud. It's true that we don't know what
we've got until we lose it, but it's also true that we don't know what we've been missing until it arrives

Well put, GR & SK. FWIW, I don't see anyone saying MJ was a saint or any of these threads becoming shrines.
My two cents: I was not a fan of MJ. His music never really appealed me even when he was the hottest thing on the planet. I feel for his kids. I think it is a shame that he ultimately became a freakshow and his weird life and creepy obsession with children ultimately overshadowed his music and talent. If Tom Cruise died I would feel for his family, but I would not make him into a saint either. |

I don't think that anybody would "suck up" to Tommy Wee the way he is "sucking up" to Michael Jackson. Whatever his
"shortcomings", Jackson was a genius. I don't think that the same thing could be said about Tommy Wee and nobody would dare to claim so.
