I completely believe that this is what he told her in their first "love at first sight" business meeting/contract proposal. ITA with you. I think that and a fat paycheck was what convinced her to sign the dotted line. Ya know, I may be in the minority, but I think her career would have stalled even if she hadn't hooked up with MTP. I think she would have found work in supporting roles but she was terrible in The Gift, Batman Begins and Thank You For Smoking. (Seriously, she was so unbelievable it was cringe-worthy.) Also, she was pushing 30 and getting too old to play the ingeune. I never bought the idea that she had this hot, rising career that he threw water on.

Totally agree. Remember too, this was in early 2005. Tom was still powerful and still popular. He had not yet offended most of America with his snarky asides to Matt Lauer. Heck, back in 2005 if Tom had told me that he would make me an A list star, and I have absolutely no acting potential or background at all, I would have believed it. I think Katie could have found decent employment playing supporting roles that didn't require a lot of acting ability. She was still likable at that point, and seemed earnest. Would she have reached close to A list status had she never met The Tiny One? No way. Her "acting" in Smoking reminds me of a child playing at dress up. She simply cannot and could not pull off anything that requires her to be something she's not; i.e., tough as nails journalist in Smoking or tough as nails ADA in Batman Begins.
The only thing that Tom "helped" her in was media exposure. Had she remained Katie Holmes, supporting or bit part actress, she would never be subject of this much attention, exposure and media speculation. Never.
