Bit of useless but interesting information:

Did you know that the actual original spelling of the word is "charivari"?

Betcha boots. How they get "shiv-a-ree" out of that, I do not know.

I learned the word to mean the teasing/hazing/pranking that friends gave a couple on their wedding night after the couple had retired to bed. Friends would come around with noisemakers or try to scale the outside walls of the house and peek in the windows, anything to disturb the big event.
