I always thought her "loose" reputation was a bit uncalled for.

I know what you're saying, but she really was a bit of an easy lay for her age, time and position. Considering virginity was required of Princess Diana in the 20th century, no way was the little Howard girl coming out of her marriage to Henry alive.

Interestingly enough, Anne Boleyn was probably not a virgin when she met Henry. In fact, she was supposed to wed another man and I believe when he asked to marry her, he implied that they had already done the deed.

Also, Diana's virginity requirement had more to do with Charles's great-uncle, Lord Louis Mountbatten, then anything else. He felt that not only should a suitable bride be a virgin but ideally, quite a few years younger. (The main beef he had with Camilla was that she was the same age as Charles.) Of course, he did have a particular woman in mind when he made these requirements: his granddaughter, Amanda Knatchbull. Unfortunately for him, she wanted no part in this at all.
Of course, but Anne was a completely different kettle of fish from Katherine in that she was also a woman of sharp mind, intellectual finesse and irresistible presence for whom Henry was quite willing to reshape the Western religious and political world. Katherine's chief contribution to the marriage was a vagina, and apparently a well-visited one at that. Terrible double standard, but kings rewrite the rules as they go.

As for Diana, I'm only pointing out that virginity has been a sticking point -- at least on paper -- for royal marriages through the ages.
