FWIW, I don't think Tommy is on a mission to wreck her career. He may not want anyone to eclipse him, but I don't think he has the motivation to do that.

I don't think so either, Kid.  I do believe that Tommy wants to be the only peacock in the family, so to speak, but it would only make him look better to have an attractive, successful wife.  Having a wife that is ridiculed and panned for her profession, as well as her "style", is not helping him any.

Husband turned on "War of the Worlds" last night. I groaned, but quickly got caught up in the story. Tom was good. He was good enough that I forgot he was Tom Cruise

So Magical
, I hate to admit it, but I liked the movie overall as well.  Tommy can turn out some entertaining movies, although I give Spielberg a lot of credit too.  Although Tommy does run a lot - - and I thought Dakota Fanning's character was the whiniest brat.  JMO.

What happened when the Gruesome Twosome hooked up? Did the energy required for their fake life leave nothing for the screen? I never thought KAK was a great actress, but damn, they both got much much worse after getting together

I think the fact that these two have absolutely nothing in common, other than they both have SAG cards, played a big part.  They obviously don't even have a platonic friendship to fall back on, a la Cruise and Kidman.  It's obvious to me that Katie has very little dedication and drive to go with some type of ambition.  Kidman had and has it and Tommy absolutely has it.  I would go so far as to claim the man is probably a severe workaholic - - always moving, always working, always thinking of the next project.  Katie appears to be content to shop, pose for pictures and just accept whatever assignments someone, anyone, can provide her with. I would think that would make someone like Tommy crazy.

So I do think Katie has affected his professional and personal life.  It coincided with Pat Kingsley's exodus and Tommy figuratively hanging himself in public, via the couch jumping and ranting to Matt Lauer, et al.  I think perhaps Tommy knew he had made a mistake with Katie but the die was cast and at that point he had little choice but to follow through.  It's so obvious that he is unhappy - - when is the last time we saw him with Katie, with a legitimate smile on his face?   He looks happy with his kids and he looked happy when living Beauty and the Beast when he saw fans and interacted with them.  But with her?  He looks strained and tense.  Not exactly the greatest love evah.

They're idiots, which I don't necessarily find offensive. But I do find it offensive that they think I'm an idiot and would believe what they're saying.
