Compare and Contrast:

Re Tom Cruise:

"In a career spanning more than two and a half decades, Tom Cruise has achieved unprecedented success as an actor and producer - becoming one of the most admired actors of his generation and one of the most powerful forces in Hollywood. Cruise has received three Academy Award nominations and has won three Golden Globe awards for his performance in such hit films as "Born on the Fourth of July," "Jerry Maguire" and "Magnolia" and numerous accolades for his performances in "The Last Samurai," "Minority Report" and "Collateral." Cruise's films have resulted in worldwide box office totals of approximately $6 billion and his last two films, "War of the Worlds" and "Mission: Impossible III" have grossed nearly $1 billion worldwide. Overall, Cruise has made 14 films that have grossed $100 million in domestic receipts alone, with his last seven consecutive films reaching that benchmark. Most recently, Cruise and his partner Paula Wagner announced that they will drive the rebirth of United Artists, as MGM's operating partner. Wagner will serve as Chief Executive Officer of United Artists, overseeing the day to day operations of the studio alongside her longstanding producing partner Cruise.

Cruise has been honored with tributes ranging from Harvard's Hasty Pudding Man of the Year Award to the John Huston Award from the Artists Rights Foundation, The American Cinematheque Award for Distinguished Achievement in Film, and has been memorialized as being the only Hollywood star to have his own day in Japan - Tom Cruise Day, annually on October 6.

"Prior to the tribute by MLA at their upcoming Promise Gala, Cruise was honored in 2003 by MENTOR/National Mentoring Partnership with their Excellence in Mentoring Award. He is recognized globally as an untiring ambassador of goodwill and as an international advocate, activist and philanthropist in the fields of health, education and human rights."

Re L. Ron Hubbard:

Well, there are the more than 26 million children now reading because of L. Ron Hubbard's educational discoveries; the millions of men and women freed from substance abuse through his breakthroughs in drug rehabilitation; the more than 59 million who have been touched by his non-religious moral code; and the many millions more who hold his work to be the spiritual cornerstone of their lives.

"Although best known for Dianetics and Scientology, Ron, or LRH, as he is known to millions, cannot be so simply categorized. Bantu tribesmen in southern Africa, for example, who know nothing of Dianetics and Scientology, know Ron the educator. Likewise, factory workers in Albania know him only for his administrative discoveries; children in China know him only as the author of their moral code, and readers in a dozen languages know him only for his novels. So, no, LRH is not an easy man to categorize and certainly does not fit popular misconceptions of "religious founder" as an aloof and contemplative figure. Yet the more one comes to know this man and his achievements, the more one comes to realize he was precisely the sort of person to have brought us Scientology - the only major religion founded in the 20th Century. He was larger than life, attracted to people, liked by people, dynamic, charismatic and immensely capable in two dozen fields.

The pages to follow will offer some sense of L. Ron Hubbard and his accomplishments. Given that he himself always measured the success of an idea in terms of its workability, that point has been stressed. Yet given the scope of what he achieved - as an author, educator, humanitarian, administrator, artist and much more - no such treatment can be entirely complete. After all, how can one convey, in a few dozen pages, the impact of someone who has so deeply touched so many? Nevertheless, this concise profile of the man and his achievements is provided in the spirit of what he himself declared: "If things were a little better known and understood, we would all live happier lives."

ETA: I wrote on tchq that I googled the hell out of Mentor sites and couldn't find a Scientology connection. So I want to know which of those that are praising MTP out of ALL proportion is the covert Scientologist. Or whose balls are being squeezed by the cult. Is someone in Heidi Fleiss's titanium vaults? Somebody knows something. I wish they'd dish. image
