For some reason, the question of sexuality/sexual orientation seems to be getting more attention than the issue of a mother's poor judgement (which I feel is the real crux of this controversy). It's not unusual for little boys to engage in role play and experiment with something like wearing a dress or putting on makeup. It does not necessarily mean that the child is going to become a flaming homosexual when he grows up. It's possible that from Damian's perspective, wearing a pink bikini is just silly play. However, I have a problem with Hurley taking it upon herself to post that picture on the INTERNET instead of keeping it as a private moment within the family home. I also have a problem with a short-sighted parent who makes their child the object of ridicule and doesn't think twice about the lasting impact. Having a bunch of strangers around the world--let alone your peers--endlessly tease you about your sexual identity and putting it all under public scrutiny is not "cute" nor fun. It's humiliating. Most boys see themselves as being male and they would be very embarrassed if such a "girly" photo of themselves came out in the open. Can you imagine the discomfort of constantly defending your identity to a group of jeering classmates? Even if Damian did eventually turn out to be gay later in life, I still would feel it's wrong for Hurley to post the picture on the grounds that it is up to the individual to out himself and not be "set up" (hello Perez, are you listening?). Until Damian is old enough to make decisions and understand their consequences, it's cruel for a parent to engage in something that could negatively effect their child's future. Will Damian be scarred for life from this incident? I sincerely hope not. Only time will tell.
