I'm not sure if the Liz Smith blurb is supposed to be read as the usual "suck up" piece. For the most part, she just reported what TomKat did during their stay in NYC. As for this statement:
Despite the above quote, we don't think Tom Cruise is crazy. He just ... wants his way. Why not? He works hard for it.
My eye caught sight of the ellipsis. Why did she use it? Why couldn't she simply type the sentence as "He just wants his way" to sound more firm and not wavering? It was as if Liz deliberately paused to show that she had to fabricate an explanation to describe Tom (i.e. she may privately agree that he's odd and controlling but had to come up with a more neutral stance for her column). Surely no fan or critic can disagree with the fact that Tom is someone who "wants his way" and is meticulous with his demands, right? People can couch criticisms and insults within seemingly innocuous words. How many times have we described Tom as being a "uber-heterosexual, manly, virile" man when we are actually suggesting the opposite?

(And he knows when it is politic to alter his views. In his most recent sit-down with Oprah, Tom said he'd misjudged the depth of postpartum depression. You all remember his set-too with Brooke Shields over that matter!)
This quote tells me that Liz Smith knows the game that Cruise is playing. She acknowledges that Cruise's image/career is in trouble and he had to do some PR to save it by altering his views to appear more favourable. Can you imagine one of the Idiot 11 and any other crazed TC fan making such a sober observation or even admitting that much?

But never let it be said that Tom allows a moment to pass when he doesn't want the world to know how much he adores Katie.
Again, I ask...is that a 'kiss butt' statement? I don't think so. Really, it could read either way. Liz Smith followed up this quote with the story of how Tom publicly announced in the restaurant that he was going to kiss his wife. She doesn't give a personal comment but lets the ridiculous anecdote speak for itself. Some people may read it and gush, "Awww! Tom is so romantic! TomKat are sooooo in love!!!"; others may sarcastically think, "Oh yeah, that Tom really adores Katie!" while rolling their eyes right back into their heads. See what I mean?

I don't get the same fawning vibe as I normally would from a People magazine article. My 2 cents.
