One of them is a HUGE Top Gun fan, at the reception he and his buddies got very hammered, fell at the bride's feet and started singing the song. She thought it was hilarious, her more uptight husband was mortified. ETA Just wanted to clarify, they did that years before Tiny's own wedding. Doing it as a joke is kinda of acceptable. But doing it as a romantic 'gesture' is just plain deluded. Even more so when it's your own movie. Note to Tom- you are NOT Maverick. I know you fly your little planes, and you like doing the military salute to your little friends but THIS ISN'T REAL LIFE. DEAL WITH IT.
When my mum and stepdad were still in the early years of their relationship he once turned up underneath her bedroom window at about 1am, p*ssed as a fart, and proceeded to serenade her with Stevie Wonder's "I just called to say I love you" and wouldn't shut up (in spite of the lights going on up and down the street and curtains twitching) until she let him in. Thankfully, she saw the funny side of it and they have been together for over 20 years. Notice the common point in both our stories? The people doing the singing were all very drunk at the time! I think I would be more mortified (and looking for the nearest exit) if the guy who was singing to me was stone cold sober. Doing it once while sober and straightfaced is creepy. Doing it over and over again while sober and straightfaced is creepy AND lacking in imagination.
