My decision to see a movie never has anything to do with who's in it. I see it because the story interests me. If it doesn't, I'm not going to fork over the cash. If the movie includes actors and actresses I like, so much the better.

Of course there are actors I consider hot, and if I knew one of them was gay, it would probably affect my attraction to him simply because it's hard to fantasize about someone you know wouldn't be attracted to anyone of your anatomical configuration. Again, though, it would have nothing to do with whether or not I would watch his movies.

I do understand, however, that I am not necessarily typical of the "average American." For most of them, I think the problem is suspension of disbelief, as Peach mentioned. If the audience is distracted by an actor's sexuality, they may perceive him as less convincing in his role because they're projecting their own knowledge of his preferences onto his performance.
