I agree that the MPAA tends to have a bizarrely twisted morality and often gives violence too much of a pass while it at the same time condemns some innocuous sexuality and language.

It is unfortunate, but broad generalities are the only way to market to a MASS audience. MASS is, by definition, the lowest common denominator. Independent films with small budgets and boutique distributors can afford to sacrifice demographics for the sake of art and quality; indeed they occasionally find a larger niche (look at Juno, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, etc.), but they also don't have investors risking $100 million-plus to get their film made. That's just the reality.
