If you wait until the pain is unendurable and THEN call for for the anesthesiologist, it's going to take 20 minutes for the doctor to show up and another 20 minutes to get the epidural going. When the contractions are coming every minute, I can tell you that this will be the longest 40 minutes of your life! I am amazed by people who say 'do it nature's way'. If you were having an operation, wouldn't you want more pain medication then a leather strap to bite? Once the epidural is in you will enjoy the birth in a whole new way. Congratulations by the way! Is it a boy, girl or surprise?
Don't count on getting the epidural right when you get to the hospital -- unless you are already in active labor. My contractions were coming every 4-5 minutes, and I remember begging for pain relief, but I was only dilated 2 centimeters. An epidural may not be an option to relieve pain during labor if any of the following apply: You use blood thinners Have low platelet counts Are hemorrhaging or in shock Have an infection in the back Have a blood infection If you are not at least 4 cm dilated Epidural space can not be located by the physician If labor is moving too fast and there is not enough time to administer the drug
