Arnie Lerma has posted a message on alt.religions.scientology indicating that Shawn Lonsdale, a critic of scientology who produced a series of videos on Scientology for public access television in Clearwater, has been found dead in his room, an apparent suicide. For those of you who watched the John Sweeney Panorama documentary, "Scientology and Me," Shawn was the guy who was being interviewed by John Sweeney when Tommy Davis drove up and walked over with a dossier on Shawn indicating that he was a "sex criminal" (to use Davis's words).

Here's the text of the message:

I'm very sorry to be the bearer of this news. 2:20 PM Monday Feb 18th
I just received a telephone call, from a reliable source, in
Clearwater,

Shawn Lonsdale was found dead in his room, a hose had been connected
from the exhaust of his car and run into a window.

the police are investigating.

I have no further data so don't ask me...
The original poster on ARS was at 12:23 AM on the 17th..midnight of
the 16th/17th...

of the scientologists and putting it on the Pinellas Public Access
Channel

The story first appeared on alt.religions.scientology yesterday, the 17th. As it was an anonymous post, I thought I'd wait before commenting on it. When Arnie Lerma posted it, I considered it a credible report.

Shawn was "fair-gamed" fairly viciously. The "Church" of Scientology put up posters about him on nearly every storefront in downtown Clearwater. He had trouble finding a job and was apparently worried about losing a place to live; I can only presume that he was experiencing stress on a number of levels. He's another martyr for the cause, along with so many others.

The manner of death is very suspicious. I have never heard of anybody committing suicide by putting a hose between the tail-pipe of your car and the window of your house. I'm inclined to think it's foul play.

Putting the hose from the tail-pipe to the window of the CAR makes sense, but I have heard that this is still a difficult and iffy method. I think it was easier years ago before they had unleaded gas, but I am not sure.

I agree that the manner of death sounds suspicious, at least as it's been reported. As for leaded versus unleaded gas, both of them result in carbon monoxide, which is what kills you.

And I agree, the mode of death seems a little odd to say the least (how easy would it be for a third party to run a pipe into a sleeping persons room...?).

If this horrible story pans out to be true, seems like someone in the UK would let that Sweeney guy know that one of his interviewees is now deceased in a shady fashion. What with the Morton book, and all of the protests going on worldwide, this might the time to follow up on that original story. And if Sweeney follows up on it, wouldn't it start to gather steam worldwide?

The real question for me is did this young man have access to a garage? If not, I'm supposed to believe that a car was left running on the street for the amount of time needed to fill up a previously oxygen filled room with Carbon monoxide... and the car remained safe? It's not like Central Florida is without it's share of crime. Was this young man in a gated community with security guards?

And if he did have access to a garage, why not use the garage instead of the bedroom?

The thing about carbon monoxide poisoning is that if you're already asleep you surely won't feel any different. If someone puts this chemical into your bedroom as you're sleeping...... Sounds very suspicious to me.

Just for the record...I will NEVER kill myself, I don't do drugs or drive drunk. If I should perish in any of these ways...the fix is in.

Shawn was a very nice and very brave person.
This is so sad I can hardly stand it.

Let's hope the CoS Police Department Clearwater Police Department actually looks into it.

Frankly, I think this situation calls for an outside source investigation.

We can speculate, we can protest, but we're never going to know the truth with Clearwater police on the case. Also, would there be legal grounds to have an outside police force investigate it? And would it be worth it by the time the legal hoopla to achieve it was finished, because you just know that CW police would just fudge it so that anything incriminating or pointing towards foul play would be mislabled and mislaid and filed under X.

It's been mentioned on Clambake by the poster PTS that he passed the info on to a BBC person to contact Sweeney. Also it looks like it was ruled a suicide as a "note" was found. I wonder if they even bothered to investigate and fingerprint the note and the hose. There is supposed to be a story by Jon Abel in tomorrows SP Times.

Jon Abel at the St Pete Times confirmed to me this evening that Shanwn
Lonsdale's death is officially being ruled a suicide.

I was told that Shawn DID leave a note , but the contents of the note
are not released.



Jon Abel will have a story in tomorrow's SPT.

I wonder if anything could be pursued under civil rights legislation. That would involve the state and the Feds. Meaning, was he deprived of fundamental rights for having a non-religious stance in a town controlled by one religion?

I've just been googling it and all I can find is message board postings from people saying that they have heard of Shawn's death and asking whether it's (a) true and (b) who thinks it's suicide or murder?

Absolutely nothing on google news or anything that looks official, but I may be overtired and not seeing it.

I don't know if anyone has figured out where the original post came from. However, Arnie Lerma has been in contact with the police, who verified the death. Arnie is a reliable source, imo.

Today was a holiday, following a weekend, police mentioned to Arnie that they are trying to locate family to notify them before public announcement.

Sista, I think that's an interesting idea. If Shawn Lonsdale has any surviving relatives, they might want to go to the FBI with their suspicions and get other CO$ critics to provide info about other "Suicides."
