They're the ones who pick up the votes that would have gone to people who have been eliminated because they keep on pulling out surprises and raising their game every week. Think Kelly Clarkson, Clay Gaykin, Elliott Yamin, and our own adored Cookie. Kris did that. People who start out very strong, and consistently stay that way throughout the competition (Tamyra Grey, Chris Daughtry, Melinda Doolittle), start out with a huge fan base, but just don't gather new fans because they've started out with the bar set so high that no one is surprised at anything they do. That's my impression, anyway.

People either got tired of it, offended by the obvious efforts to sway their votes or assumed that Adam was safe. Regardless, if I had to choose THE performance of the season (excluding last night because I still get goosbumps thinking of the Queen performance), it is HANDS DOWN Adam's performance of "Mad World". Go to You Tube and listen to the studio version - - it is mindblowing in its quiet beauty and absolute flawlessness. No performance could possibly touch it, IMO.

Honest to God, Kris has to feel on some level like he's been condemned to the Ninth Circle of Hell, having to wear a crown engraved with Adam's name and then being forced to sing that dreck. Bless his heart.

First time in more than a year of posting you've ever been wrong. But kudos for being half right! Congratulations to Kris, the Little Allen That Could. Did he win because he's a Christian and Adam doesn't make out with girls? Because he's better looking? (okay, I don't know where he'd be classified as better looking except maybe on Monkey Island, but whatever). Maybe Peach is right and the tweens are threatened by the Glam God. Maybe Kris showed marked improvement throughout the competition. He certainly pulled out a couple of stellar performances at crucial moments. I happen to think Kris's victory was more of a Fuck You to the blatant AI Pimping Machine that declared Adam the winner from Day One. Every aspect of the show through design or happenstance (salivating judges, Katy Perry's cape, lighting, the pimp spot, mentor praise) seemed to revolve around Adam -- through no fault of his own -- and he paid for it. No matter, Adam's a star the likes of which this show has never seen and poor Kris is destined to be a footnote in his biography. And shame on Simon who couldn't even be bothered to stand when Kris won.
