"Katie can't understand how Tom can run a big movie studio like United Artists and not be able to steer her toward an Oscar-worthy film," said the insider.

"He said that in five years she'd be the number one female box-office earner in the world. Tom really believed in Katie and that his connections would mold her into a superstar."

Common sense does not seem to be Katie's strong point. How do you expect to be a big-time box-office earner if you're not allowed to play characters that have any sort of romance? If I remember correctly, that's why she didn't do The Dark Knight. That restriction puts huge limits on what roles she can or can't take, and thus she can't become a superstar.

I completely believe that this is what he told her in their first "love at first sight" business meeting/contract proposal.

Cruise told "The Daily Mail," in January, 2009, that he first watched "the World at War" when he was 4 or 5 and it made a huge impression on him about the Second World War. Only...Cruise, born in 1962, was 4 or 5 in 1966 and 1967. Production on "The World at War" was not begun til 1969 and the program was first broadcasted in 1973. Whoa, nelly! He really DOES have super powers!!!!!!

Chris Nolan and gang did not want Katie back, but they let her save face by saying she had scheduling conflicts. I'm sure they anticipated having to deal with Tink and his demands on the set of TDK, based on how Tinky inserted himself into the Batman Begins premiers and publicity. Just another way Tink's influence scuttled Katie's career.

Now, when I look at her, I can't suspend my disbelief.

For instance, she did appear in Mad Money, but she skipped The Dark Knight based on advice from her adoring hubby. "Katie can't understand how Tom can run a big movie studio like United Artists and not be able to steer her toward an Oscar-worthy film," said the insider.

I think that and a fat paycheck was what convinced her to sign the dotted line. Ya know, I may be in the minority, but I think her career would have stalled even if she hadn't hooked up with MTP. I think she would have found work in supporting roles but she was terrible in The Gift, Batman Begins and Thank You For Smoking. (Seriously, she was so unbelievable it was cringe-worthy.) Also, she was pushing 30 and getting too old to play the ingeune. I never bought the idea that she had this hot, rising career that he threw water on.
Totally agree. Remember too, this was in early 2005. Tom was still powerful and still popular. He had not yet offended most of America with his snarky asides to Matt Lauer. Heck, back in 2005 if Tom had told me that he would make me an A list star, and I have absolutely no acting potential or background at all, I would have believed it. I think Katie could have found decent employment playing supporting roles that didn't require a lot of acting ability. She was still likable at that point, and seemed earnest. Would she have reached close to A list status had she never met The Tiny One? No way. Her "acting" in Smoking reminds me of a child playing at dress up. She simply cannot and could not pull off anything that requires her to be something she's not; i.e., tough as nails journalist in Smoking or tough as nails ADA in Batman Begins.
The only thing that Tom "helped" her in was media exposure. Had she remained Katie Holmes, supporting or bit part actress, she would never be subject of this much attention, exposure and media speculation. Never.
